Dr. Sawin graduated at the top of his class from the University of Rochester School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed both his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and his Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Pennsylvania, during which time he won the medical student teaching award. After fellowship, Dr. Sawin moved to Asheville, North Carolina where he was the director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for the Mountain Area Health Education Center. During his five years in North Carolina, Dr. Sawin developed the first full service infertility practice in that region and won two teaching awards for his work with resident physicians in training. He has special interest and expertise in the areas of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), surgical management of uterine fibroids (myomectomy), ovulation induction and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Dr Sawin has performed over 1,000 IVF procedures and over 1,000 surgical procedures in his career. He has published extensively in international journals and has been invited to speak at local and national scientific meetings on these areas of expertise. Dr. Sawin has published research on the safety of myomectomy for uterine fibroids, the role of tubal hydrosalpinx on IVF success rates and the proper development of the endometrium and its effect on embryonic implantation. He is a two time recipient of the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society Award for original research in infertility. In addition, he has twice been awarded the Medical Professional Appreciation Award by the Polycystic Ovary Association, a national patient support group for PCOS. Dr. Sawin is on the editorial board of "Fertility Today" an infertility magazine for patients, and is on the advisory board for PCOStrategies which is a organization dedicated to fertility enhancement and life management for women with PCOS. Dr. Sawin helps to educate OB/GYN physicians preparing for their board certification by participating in several board review courses. At the national level, he serves on the Practice Subcommittee on Reproductive Endocrinology of the American College of OB/GYN, which helps set the national standards for appropriate Fertility care. Dr Sawin is also the Director of the Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis program at South Jersey Fertility Center.
