FSH Injections

Purpose:  1. To increase the number of eggs available for fertilization.  2. To improve ovulation in patients unresponsive to other therapies.  3. To improve the overall chance of conceiving a pregnancy

Medications: All brands contain Follicle Stimulation Hormone (FSH):
Follistim, Gonal-F, Menopur, Bravelle, Repronex

Dosing: Daily shots under the skin or in the muscles given by the patient or partner
Usually given for 8-10 days

Monitoring: Blood test and transvaginal ultrasound done on 4-5 mornings during injection schedule.

Insemination: An intrauterine insemination is usually recommended to improve the pregnancy rate. Abstinence of 36 hours is recommended before the insemination. Intercourse every other day is still advised for most couples in the week leading up to the insemination.

Success: 10-20% per cycle depending on multiple factors. If no success in 3 cycles, then a consultation with our medical staff is recommended.

Costs: Approximately $1000 for medications, $1250 for office charges. Insurance coverage may defray some or all of these charges

Side Effects: Pelvic discomfort/bloating

Risks:

  • Multiple pregnancies: 25% for twins, <5% for triplets, <1% more than triplets
  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome: 1% risk of severe symptoms
  • Enlarged ovaries
  • Fluid accumulation in abdomen that may need to be drained
  • Blood test abnormalities, risk of blood clots in the veins
  • A cycle may have to be cancelled if the ovaries over-respond
  • Ovarian Torsion (Twisting) <1%
